Feed Readers

Feed readers are a great tool for librarians to keep track of the professional blogs and websites they follow. As librarians, we should be striving to keep up with the ever changing educational and technological landscapes, so feed readers would provide great assistance with such a task. Additionally, librarians could share feed readers with teachers and students. These could be used for curriculum planning, professional development, and to help students organize and find resources for research or other projects. There are several options for feed readers as laid out in the article.

I chose to create a Feedly account because I have heard about it before, and I wanted to use something really user-friendly. I figured if I had heard of it, it would be easiest to use. Using it was very simple, you just set up an account and begin searching for feeds to follow. Feedly also offered other choices based on my searches of “library science” and “school technology.” Within just a few minutes, I was following several feeds that are pertinent to our future work. Here are some of the feeds I followed:

TED-Ed
This feed contains hundreds of interactive lessons, videos, and resources for teachers. The feed is updated regularly with more resources each week. Customizable lesson-planning tools are available for educators. I followed this blog so that I can use it for professional development, curriculum support, and teacher resources. This resource can also be used in the library as lesson support, maker space inspiration, and other areas of education that involve creativity and learning.

Education: NPR
This feed contains relevant news articles, videos, and resources on today’s educational climate. From laws about education to curriculum, this feed will help me keep up with current events that are impacting education today.

Educational Technology on Reddit
This subreddit on the popular blogging platform Reddit focuses on ways to implement technology and digital tools into the classroom and library settings. This resource is valuable because I will be able to learn how to use digital technology better in my own library based on what teachers have experienced. We all know learning something new is hard until we experience it ourselves, so this feed provides a starting point for teachers and librarians who want to start using more effective technology.

Teacher's Tech on YouTube
This YouTube feed contains videos on how to use digital technology. There are videos that contain tips, how-tos, recommended technologies, and more about Excel, OneNote, and hundreds of other technology tools that could be beneficial to students and teachers.

School Library Journal on Tumblr
I followed this Tumblr feed to stay up to date with relevant, diverse, and meaningful texts for students. This feed also provides news articles, art, and more that deal with the current climate of book banning, library science, and more. This will be a great resource for me as I’m weeding, maintaining, and ordering books and digital resources.
