YouTube, Animoto, and QR Codes

 YouTube (section finished)

YouTube can be more than just a place to get lost watching cute cat videos for hours. When used effectively, it can be a helpful tool when building, maintaining, and promoting the library program. As a future librarian, I wanted to see how other professionals are using this platform to support the goals of the library program. I visited three channels belonging to school librarians. Here is how they are using YouTube:

@theunquietlibrary

The most helpful videos here include lessons on properly citing sources when using them in academic writing. This is such a hard skill for students to tackle, and each of the videos is so clear and explains step-by-step how and why citations are created a certain way. There are many examples of this, but here’s a very helpful example: https://youtu.be/43XtUMnosNc

Students would probably be most interested in the videos containing student opinions on books, technology apps, events and more. Not only are they some of the most popular videos on this channel, but they can also help students feel more connected and comfortable with the library program when they see their peers actively involved. Here is a great example of a student giving her opinion about Evernote: https://youtu.be/ueQUoeXBfHU

@pikesvillehslibrary

On this channel, students can find many videos for help in a variety of ways. Of these, the most helpful seem to be the ones that give students a quick overview of courses. The teachers give a brief summary of the class, expectations, and a preview of what students will learn. These would be so helpful to students as they create their schedules each semester. Here is an example of this: https://youtu.be/5_sI4g2qitQ

The most engaging videos seem to be the ones recording fun library events, like senior celebrations and other school events. These are probably the most popular because they show students actively and happily engaged in library activities. Check out this awesome video of seniors celebrating in the library: https://youtu.be/cTqy_KdeAPc

@bbmsmedia

This channel provides many helpful videos on everything from citations to book returns, library expectations to search skills. Again, I think the most helpful of these videos center around properly citing sources when using them for academic purposes. An example of this type of video can be found here: https://youtu.be/mdrCb_hHuDI

On this channel, students find the parody videos to be the most enjoyable. The students take popular movies and other pop culture references and create videos reminding students to turn in library books on time. These are student-created and hilarious! Here is my favorite example: https://youtu.be/lydaMN3417g

Overall, the ways YouTube can support the library program is ever-growing. These channels show great examples of how to use this platform to support campus goals, promote library events, teach information literacy skills, and highlight exciting campus events. Librarians could also use YouTube to promote and share author visits and book talks.

Animoto

Synopsis: Maddy is a smart, curious and imaginative 18-year-old who is unable to leave the protection of the hermetically-sealed environment within her house because of an illness. Olly is the boy next door who won't let that stop them from being together. Gazing through windows and talking only through texts, Maddy and Olly form a deep bond that leads them to risk everything to be together, even if it means losing everything. QR Codes

QR codes are a quick and easy way to streamline some of the processes and events included in library programming. One way this tool can help is by allowing students to search and check out books faster. This is beneficial because it allows students to use their time in the library conducting information searches, reading, and working on projects/tasks. QR codes can also be used during engaging activities in the library, like contests and scavenger hunts. The possibilities of QR codes are endless and ever-growing.
